Google has unveiled a new streaming video gadget which will give users easier access to Internet content on their televisions - taking aim straight at Apple's attempt to move into the living room.
The new device, called Chromecast, is a small stick roughly the same size as a USB flash-storage drive that can be plugged directly into an HDMI port on flat-panel TVs.
It syncs with users' smartphones, tablets and personal computers to bring Netflix, YouTube and other Internet content to what is usually the biggest screen in households.

Google wants to have a presence on TVs because it could open up a lucrative new channel for it to sell more ads, which bring in most of its revenue.
In a show of its determination to make inroads on TVs, Google yesterday began selling Chromecast for just $35 (£22.85). That price undercuts the most popular Internet-streaming devices made by Apple and Roku.
An Apple TV box sells for $99 (£65), while the least expensive Roku box capable of showing high-definition video goes for $80 (£50).
Roku, a company that formed within Internet video subscription service Netflix, also sells an Internet streaming stick similar to Chromecast for $100 (£65).

Simplicity: In a move that has allowed Google to keep costs down, the hard work of processing video is done on a synced device, with Chromecast providing an easy interface to display the content on the big screen

Chromecast, which leans heavily in Google's widely used Chrome Web Browser, is just the latest product from the company intended to make inroads into the living room. Previous offerings haven't worked out well.
The company initially tried to embed an operating system called Google TV into sets made by TV manufacturers, but that flopped.
Last year, Google introduced an orb-like device called the Nexus Q in hopes of delivering more Internet video to flat-panel TVs, only to quickly pull the product from the market.
With the Chromecast, in a move that has allowed Google to keep costs down, the hard work of processing video is done on the synced device, with the stick merely providing an easy interface to display the content on the big screen.
The Apple and Roku streaming boxes, by contrast, are standalone gadgets connected directly to the Internet which rely on a standard remote control to select content.

Terrifying: A horrifying video has been released of the moment the train hurtled off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela lasy night

A terrifying video has been captured the moment a Spanish passenger train hurtled off the tracks and smashed into a wall, killing at least 78 people.
All eight carriages of the Madrid to Ferrol train derailed near the city of Santiago de Compostela last night, leaving at least 140 people injured including one Briton.

Dramatic video footage from a security camera shows the train careering into a concrete wall as it came off the rails on the bend, before flipping onto its side and hurtling down the railway line with its terrified passengers on board.

One of the drivers was trapped in his cabin and told the railway station by radio that the train entered the bend at 190 kilometres per hour (120 mph), reported newspaper El Pais.
The speed limit on that section of track is 80km/h (50mph).
'We're only human! We're only human!' he told the station, the newspaper said, citing sources close to the investigation. 'I hope there are no dead, because this will fall on my conscience.'
Police have put an unnamed train driver under formal investigation - the Galicia government said one driver was in hospital.

Newspaper reports cited witnesses as saying driver Francisco Jose Garzon,who helped rescue victims, had shouted: 'I've derailed! What do I do?' into a phone.
The accident is the worst train accident in 30 years and television footage showed one wagon pointing upwards into the air with one of its ends twisted and disfigured.

Admission: The driver told railway officials by radio that he took the bend at 190 kilometres (118 miles) per hour in an urban zone with a speed limit of 80 kph, daily El Pais reported

Another carriage that had been severed in two could be seen lying on a road near the track.
State-owned train operator Renfe said in a statement that 218 passengers and an unspecified number of staff were on board at the time of the accident.

Renfe said the derailment happened at 8.41pm local time on a high-speed section that was inaugurated two years ago.
After the crash, bodies were seen covered in blankets next to the tracks and rescue workers tried to get trapped people out of the train's carriages, with smoke billowing from some of the wreckage.
Some passengers were pulled out of broken windows, and one man stood on a carriage lying on its side, using a pickaxe to try to smash through a window.

Most of us spend time every morning daubing our faces with eye creams, moisturisers, foundations and powders in effort to minimise the eye bags that scream 'I had five glasses of Malbec and fewer hours of sleep last night' to our colleagues.
But women in Korea are doing everything they can to make their under-eye skin plumper - whether through make-up or by using little sticky strips of tape that make the skin beneath the eye 'pop' out. Some women are even having plastic surgery to achieve the look, while others are resorting to using commercial filler and fat grafts.

Tragic: Christian Benitez, in action for Birmingham, has died aged 27 after suffering a heart attack

Christian Benitez, who played for Birmingham City in the Premier League, has tragically died at the age of 27 after suffering a heart attack.
A summer transfer target for Tottenham, the Ecuador striker had only completed a £10million switch to Qatari side El Jaish from Mexican team Club America a few weeks ago.
He made his debut for the club on Sunday against Qatar SC, but was admitted to hospital after the game with stomach pains.

An Ecuador Football Federation statement read: 'The FEF regrets to inform you of the death of Christian Benitez, the striker of Qatar club Al Jaish and the Ecuador national team.
'Benitez, who was with his new club in Qatar, had a severe stomach pain, which was why he was rushed to a hospital, where after a few hours suffered he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, which ended his life.
'The Ecuadorian Football Federation extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family - parents, wife, children - and friends of our striker Christian Benitez. May he rest in peace.'

This baby swift tries to bite off more than it can chew as it attempts to swallow its carer's thumb.
The tiny swiftlet was being cared for at a wildlife rehabilitation centre after it had fallen from its nest at just two weeks old.

And to her surprise the vulnerable chick then opened its mouth wide enough to fit the tip of her thumb in.
The little swift was handed in to the Wildlife Aid Foundation in Leatherhead, Surrey, after it had been found in the nearby village of Claygate.
The young bird was thought to have fallen about 20ft from its nest in the eaves of a house.
Weighing just 14g when the team at Wildlife Aid took it in, the bird was also very thin and incredibly dehydrated.

Lucy, of Wildlife Aid Foundation, said: 'The swiftlet was in a bad state when it was handed in to us.
'Any young swift that falls to the ground is in danger because the birds can't take off from the floor.
'We had to start off feeding it a diet of liquidised crickets before we could move it on to the juicy waxworms.
'We hope to be able to release the bird in about four weeks when its muscles have been built up and it is ready to fly.

'Swifts are migratory birds and their annual migration to South Africa usually starts in about eight weeks time so hopefully it'll be ready in time.'
The staff at Wildlife Aid hope the swiftlet will have doubled in weight to about 35g once it is ready for release.
Lucy added that Wildlife Aid is currently taking more swifts into their care than ever before which she puts down to the spell of hot weather.
Swifts are quite unique as a species in that they eat and sleep while flying and only land to have babies and feed them.

David “Kidd” Kraddick, the radio and TV personality whose locally based http://coolfwdmail.blogspot.com/search/label/Kidd%20Kraddick in the Morning is heard on Dallas’ “Kiss FM” KHKS-FM (106.1) and stations across the nation, has died, sources said late Saturday.
Kraddick was 53. His cause of death was not released.

“It has been confirmed that Kidd Kraddick passed away today in New Orleans at a golf tournament organized to raise money for his beloved Kidd’s Kids charity,” KHKSFM owner Clear Channel Communications Inc. said in a news release Saturday. The statement was attributed to Kelly Kibler, Clear Channel’s Dallas manager, and was confirmed by a Kraddick’s publicist, Ladd Biro.

“He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him,” the statement read. “Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years, his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children,” the company said.

A statement from Kraddick’s family said: “We are all shocked and saddened by Kidd’s untimely passing. At this time, we ask that you respect our privacy as we mourn and grieve our family’s tremendous loss.”
New Orleans media outlets reported that Kraddick was taken to a hospital in the city and died just after 1 p.m.
Kraddick has been a staple in the Dallas market since his late-night debut in 1984 on “The Eagle” KEGL-FM (97.1). But his ascension to mainstay status began in 1992, when he moved to Kiss-FM and began broadcasting his morning show. By 2001 the show was syndicated, and, according to his website, is heard in more than 100 cities.

Kristen was taking a break from shooting Camp X-Ray, about a young army recruit who is sent to work at Guantanamo Bay.
Kristen's character Cole finds her self struggling to cope with her assignment to the detention centre, expecting she would be deployed to a war zone.
Of course, little does she know that Camp X Ray is its own war zone as she tries to negotiate her feelings towards the detainees and their treatment, as well as her own treatment at the hands of other American recruits.
While serving in the prison she befriends a man who has been imprisoned there for eight years.
The film, which is set to be released next year, also stars Prison Break actor Lane Garrison and rising star Tara Holt.

While London’s busy Regent Street certainly sees a colourful cross-section of life in the capital, it is doubtful it has ever seen anything quite like this. Shoppers today were treated to the sight of 10 women striding down the street wearing blue jeans, high heels… and very little else.
The stunt was part of the promotion of InvisiBra: a new strapless, backless bra that all the women were wearing to maintain their dignity.
The bra claims to be a backless, strapless, self-adhesive bra that will lift and enhance cleavage but won’t slip off.

Despite of their minimal attire and the downcast weather, the girls kept a smile on their face as they posed for the waiting cameras

Some of the bystanders couldn't believe their eyes (or their luck) as half naked girls suddenly strolled by

it also aims to bring an element of fashion into the strapless bra market, with the Invisibra coming in a range of colours and fabrics rather than the traditional ‘nude’ shade.
The silicone InvisiBra is priced at £48 while the less padded Fabric InvisiBras cost £38.
Unsurprisingly rather shocked tourists stopped and openly stared at the scene as the girls flaunted their bodies.

A few rather cheeky builders who couldn’t believe their luck could be seen snapping away on their camera phones as the girls posed for the waiting press.
They managed to maintain a smile despite the rather inclement weather in London today and, despite some rather extensive bouncy walking, there were no ‘wardrobe malfunctions’, giving sway to the InvisiBra’s claims.

Lauren Silverman managed a smile as she broke her cover and appeared in public for the first time since it was revealed she is pregnant with Simon Cowell's baby.
The 36-year-old socialite was seen walking her seven-year-old son Adam down the driveway of the $4million family home in Bridgehampton, New York, where she has been staying since the baby news broke.
Lauren's outing came as a friend of music mogul Cowell, who is worth an estimated £200million, insisted he will do everything he can to support and provide for his child.

The friend told MailOnline: 'Simon has given all his exes houses - so of course he's going to be generous to his own child', adding that 'he has not even considered not looking after this baby.

She then turned round and walked quickly back into the house as the friend ensured Adam was safely on the school bus.
Lauren has been staying at the seven-bedroom property with her mother Carole and another friend.
The house had been listed for rent recently and the description on a real estate website says it has four fireplaces, seven and a half bathrooms and a country eat-in kitchen.
Despite Lauren and Adam's relatively good spirits as they were pictured, it is likely that the child will be the main issue in his parents' divorce case.

Andrew filed papers in the Manhattan Supreme Court two weeks ago, naming Cowell as a co-respondent and citing adultery as the reason for ending the marriage.

The source said: ‘Andrew wants to embarrass Simon. There’s no way this will actually go to trial, but Andrew just wants to get back at him.’

Vanessa added: 'It could be that in the fight between Lauren and Andrew, the financial circumstances debate would have to bring in Simon.
'Andrew's team are likely to be saying that when you look at Lauren's needs, you have to take into account that Simon will be looking after her.'

Lauren is said to be thrilled about the fact that she is pregnant with Simon's baby, with a source telling People that she is 'ecstatic' about her relationship with the mogul.
Not everyone is happy about the pregnancy news, however, as Andrew's brother Alexander Silverman insisted that the baby constituted a 'betrayal' of trust, because Simon and Andrew were close friends for many years.
He told the New York Post: 'It is an unbelievable story of betrayal. It is a sad story and a tragic story.'
No evidence has been revealed so far to suggest that Cowell and Lauren's affair started before the marriage began to fall apart.
Cowell maintained a stony silence on the subject as he was pictured for the first time since the pregnancy revelations while leaving a television studios in Los Angeles after filming The X Factor USA on Wednesday night.

Leaked: Pictures from The Canyons have been leaked on line showing Lindsay Lohan topless

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the sex scenes between Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen in The Canyons.
So it comes as no surprise that the Paul Schrader film features a lot of nudity – in particular from the 27-year-old actress.
And as the film was released in the US on Friday it didn’t take long for grabs of the topless star to find their way online.

Nudity: The film features Lindsay taking part in sex scenes, including one with three porn stars

The erotic film, which was written by Brett Easton Ellis, features the actress, who has just completed her 90-day stint in rehab, taking a shower.
Lindsay, who’s character Tara also takes part in a four-way sex scene with three porn stars in the film, famously made the film crew strip to their boxers while filming one of the scenes.
Writing about the incident Stephen Rodrick, recalled: 'Lohan dropped her robe. Schrader shouted action, and they filmed the scene in one 14-minute take. About halfway through, Lohan looked directly into the camera and flashed a dirty, demented smile at Schrader.’

It isn’t of course the first time the famous red head has stripped - in the past she has posed for Playboy as well in the film Machete, which saw her skinning dipping.
Speaking about working with Lindsay on the film, writer Brett recently said: ‘I have no idea what Lindsay’s leaning toward. All I know is she’s very street smart. She’s a very mixed up 20-something, but very knowledgeable about film and composition and lighting and hitting your mark.
‘When she did our first table read, she blew me away. She was late, she was a little scattered, we had nervous small talk, and then she turned it on immediately.’

He added: ‘I don’t see her as lost. I know a lot of 20-somethings and they’re all messed up. Just two days after Lindsay completed her court-ordered stay in rehab she returned to work and recorded a guest-host gig for Chelsea Lately.
According to TMZ, sources on set said the actress was 'very funny,' mocking host Chelsea Handler for drinking too much and holding her own during a roundtable with with comedians Jen Kirkman and Fortune Feimster.
The Canyons was released on August 2 at the IFC Center in New York City, the Bell Lightbox in Toronto, and on video on demand platforms. It is yet to be released in the UK.

Meanwhile, reviews of Lindsay's performance in the movie have been less than flattering, with The Star-Ledger's Steve Whitty asking: 'Who remembers her when she was still a performer, and not just a cautionary tale?'
And then: 'Lohan performance is more out of duty for a paycheck ($100 a day, plus a percentage of the profits)' was the input from John Serba of Michigan Live.
New York Times critic Manohla Dargis didn't seem impressed either: 'Ms. Lohan, ornamented with a topknot and Cleopatra eyeliner, wavers in and out of ...the movie, pulling you in with husky murmurings and pushing you away with darting glances that suggest a woman searching for the exit.'
And Gene Grabowski of Levick Strategic Communications' comments to Fox News were perhaps the most derogatory: 'Lindsay Lohan is now like U.S. golfer John Daly. She’s a curiosity who is watched primarily for the side entertainment she offers, not for her professional performance.'

He is best known for playing a foul-mouthed spin doctor. Now Peter Capaldi has become one who travels in time and space.
Capaldi, the bullying Malcolm Tucker in political satire The Thick Of It, was last night unveiled as the 12th actor to play the lead role in Doctor Who.
The Scottish star had been the odds-on favourite to become the next inhabitant of the Tardis, and it appears the result may have been known three days ago, when a flurry of bets led to bookmakers suspending betting on him and lowering his odds from 40-1 to 5-6.

They now stand to lose around £100,000.
Joe Crilly, a spokesman for William Hill, said: ‘We have seen people trying to back Peter Capaldi as much as possible at every price available.’
That raised questions last night about whether someone at the BBC had leaked the name – despite the corporation going to great lengths to keep the identity of the new Time Lord a secret in an operation it had codenamed Houdini.
But while 55-year-old Capaldi was favourite to win with punters, others were not so enthralled by the decision.

His official unveiling during a live programme on BBC1 led many on Twitter to ask if he is too old to play the role.

Some users on the social networking site described his announcement as ‘exciting’ and ‘perfect’, but others were more critical – one wrote: ‘Peter Capaldi is not attractive because he’s old’, while another posted: ‘I’m not watching Doctor Who any more. Peter Capaldi is too old.’
Some 400 Doctor Who fans, some dressed as their favourite characters, were in the audience last night to see the announcement.

Capaldi, who appeared in a 2008 episode of the series alongside tenth Doctor David Tennant, told presenter Zoe Ball of his excitement at taking on the role.
‘It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer,’ he said. ‘For a while I couldn’t tell my daughter who kept on looking on the internet and kept seeing people saying so and so should be the Doctor and she got rather upset.
‘But it has been absolutely fantastic in its own way, so many wonderful things have been happening.

After revelling until the early hours of the morning at the Crop Over Festival Foreday Morning Jam in Barbados on Saturday, the 25-year-old was right back at it again on Monday.
This time, the Diamonds singer was seen sipping out of a hip flask as she danced on a float during the Kadooment carnival, part of the eight day festival.

The first half left off last September with a kind of pre-ending: while on the toilet, the Drug Enforcement Administration agent Hank (Dean Norris) at long last realized that his meek, science teacher brother-in-law, Walt (Bryan Cranston), was the drug lord known as Heisenberg.

Sunday’s episode, technically the ninth but in spirit a premiere of the second half of Season 5, picks up the story with a flash forward that echoes that of the actual premiere of Season 5 in July 2012.

It’s about a year after Hank stumbled on the truth, and Walt has morphed again: he has a fake identity, his hair has grown in, his beard is bushy, he wears black-rimmed glasses and has returned to Albuquerque in a car with a New Hampshire license plate (“Live Free or Die”) and a machine gun in the trunk.

It’s not clear what happened to his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), his children or his cancer recurrence, but his old house is boarded up and chained, the abandoned pool used by teenagers as a skateboard rink. When his old neighbor sees him in the driveway, she stares, frozen with disbelief and terror, holding a bag of groceries. “Hello, Carol,” he says. The bag slips from her hands and her groceries fall to the ground.

And then the story goes back to where it left off a little more than a year ago, moments after Hank finally saw through Walt’s deception.

The series never traveled too far from where it all began: chemistry. In the very first episode, in 2008, Walt was still teaching high school science and didn’t yet know about the lung cancer that would kick off his criminal career. He told his students — the few who were listening — that chemistry is the “science of change” and broke life down to its essence: “It is growth, then decay, then transformation.”

In the years since, “Breaking Bad” has traced the growth of Walt’s empire, its decay and most of all his transformation. Throughout, one thing never changed: Crime didn’t pay.

Killers and liars don’t suffer immediate consequences in shows like “The Sopranos” or “Deadwood” or even “Dexter,” and plenty of bad deeds go unpunished. Cable shows have license to be transgressive, and that means flouting the mores that usually guides broadcast network shows.

For all its audacity, “Breaking Bad” was a throwback to a more elemental code of morality. There is a puritanical lesson to Walt’s life: he becomes a master criminal and ruthless killer with very little to show for it.
